ReCAP – Regional Contemporary Art projects is a new initiative from OSCA that engages, employs and supports artists to create contemporary site-based art projects of scale in rural and regional locations.
The 4 projects that lead this initiative are Meeting Place by Kaurna/Narungga artist Jay Milera, Opal Evolution by Leila Day and Orlando Mee, Waterways by Laura Wills and Climb/Scalata by Paul Gazzola and Tom Borgos.
Meeting Place (working title) is a First Nations led site-specific project exploring the evolution of First Nations dreaming stories and the traditional meeting place of Port Wakefield, South Australia where various First Nations groups would come together for ceremony, cultural sharing, and exchange. The project will be created with Kaurna & Narungga Senior Elders and community.
Opal Evolution is a long-term multi-arts community project in regional Andamooka that celebrates the town and its people through the origins and mythologies of opal from its geological / palaeontological formation to the Dreamtime stories of the First Nations Kokatha People and into the current day. it aims to bring new vitality to the town in the wake of COVID19 through grass roots participation in the creation of light, music and landscape projections in collaboration with leading artists.
Waterways is a new large-scale community engaged art project based on and along the Gawler River and its tributaries. It will involve a series of accessible community events, workshops and presentations in collaboration with First Nations Elders, nature specialists, local artists, community members and schools as a way to honour, celebrate and care for the waterway, its history and its future.
Climb/Scalata – SMLXL is a new site-locatable interactive sculptural work that explores the potential of collective design and community. Working with local participants from Natimuk, regional Victoria to create large scale geometric forms using standardised steel tubing, it blurs the edges between children’s playgrounds, climbing structures and contemporary sculpture into functional spaces of play.
